Hyper-personalisation in e-commerce: the 2026 trend Magento makes possible at scale

E-commerce trends 2026

Why Librairie Molière bet on personalisation at scale (and what the figures confirm).

In 2026, personalising your online store is no longer a competitive edge. It is a baseline expectation. The real question is no longer “should we personalise?” but “can your platform do it across your entire catalogue?”

Librairie Molière, the largest bookshop in Wallonia, answered that question with 2 million products on Magento. Here is what their project shows, and what you can take from it for your own.

What the figures say

71%

of consumers expect a personalised experience. 76% get frustrated when they don’t get one.

Why 2026 is a turning point

Basic personalisation is no longer enough. Enter hyper-personalisation.

“Hello [first name]” in an email, “customers also bought” under a product page: that was personalisation in 2018. In 2026, it is the bare minimum everyone does.

Hyper-personalisation goes further: it uses purchase history, browsing behaviour, stated preferences and real-time data to build a unique experience for every visitor. Not a segment. Not a cohort. One individual.

According to VWO, shoppers in 2026 want experiences that understand them “instantly, intuitively, and across every device they use”. As Publicis Sapient puts it in its analysis of 2026 e-commerce trends, “generic experiences no longer work”: generic storefronts get ignored.

The real shift in 2026 is not technological; it is a shift in expectations. For years, consumers have been exposed to the standards set by Amazon, Netflix and Spotify. They now apply those expectations to their bookseller, their building materials supplier, their B2B vendor. Whatever your sector.

The real challenge

Personalising across 2 million products is an architecture problem, not a marketing one.

Most personalisation tools work well on catalogues of a few thousand products. At scale, it is a different story: the slightest architectural weakness costs you dearly, in slow pages, irrelevant recommendations and incorrect stock levels on display.

That is exactly the challenge Librairie Molière had to meet: personalising the shopping experience across a catalogue of nearly 2 million products – books, comics, manga, stationery, games, cultural goods – while preserving what gives an independent bookshop its value: the personal advice of its booksellers.

The technical challenge

A robust architecture under load, continuous synchronisation with the Librisoft ERP, optimised performance on a massive catalogue, and consistent product data at scale.

The human challenge

Bringing the booksellers’ expertise online, keeping editorial highlights lively, and recreating online the relationship of trust that sets independent bookshops apart.

The Magento answer

Three levels of personalisation that Magento makes possible at scale.

What WiMakeIT built for Molière illustrates three distinct layers of personalisation, none of which can be easily replicated on a general-purpose platform.

1
Algorithmic personalisation – purchase history as a driver of discovery

Molière’s recommendation engine analyses each customer’s purchase history to suggest personalised reads. Not a generic algorithm, but an engine tuned to encourage literary discovery and naturally increase the average basket, without ever feeling like a hard sell. According to Barilliance, recommendations can account for up to 31% of e-commerce revenue in sessions where customers actively engage with them.

2
Human personalisation – the favourite bookseller as a guiding thread

This is the most distinctive feature of the Molière project (and the hardest to replicate with an algorithm). Each customer chooses their favourite booksellers and follows their staff picks, recommendations and themed selections. Julie has racked up 1,118 staff picks. Marie-Catherine, 401. This figure, shown on every bookseller’s profile, lends credibility to their expertise and builds a relationship of trust that online pure players cannot imitate.

The bookseller’s badge appears directly on the product page. The “Coup de coeur” (staff pick) tab sits alongside the publisher’s summary. Human expertise is built into every step of the buying journey, not tucked away in an “Our team” section.

3
Editorial personalisation – the bookshop as a living place, not a warehouse

Staff picks, seasonal selections, literary events, a calendar of author meetings and children’s activities: the Molière team keeps full editorial control from the Magento back office. Every update can be made without a developer. The homepage reflects the life of the bookshop in real time – not a static catalogue. This is what VWO identifies as one of the five major personalisation trends of 2026: omnichannel consistency, where every interaction picks up where the last one left off.

The product page as a conversion point

A product page that sells as much as it informs.

On every product page, several layers of personalisation work together: the badge of the bookseller who recommended the title, the “Coup de coeur” tab with their personal review, full technical details (pages, weight, publication date), the delivery promise (“order before 4 pm, delivered tomorrow”), five reassurance points at the bottom of the page, and cross-genre navigation that encourages discovery and grows the basket.

What this means for your online store

You don’t need 2 million products to learn from it.

What Molière demonstrates applies to any online store with a dense catalogue and a high-value customer relationship. The three principles are universal.

■

Your business expertise is a digital asset. The staff picks of Molière’s booksellers, your technicians’ advice, your product specialists’ recommendations: all of this can live online, built into the buying journey, rather than tucked away on an “About us” page.

■

Personalisation and volume are not at odds. The platform has to handle both at once: a massive catalogue AND an individual experience. That is the architecture problem Magento solves natively, where other platforms hit a ceiling.

■

Editorial control must stay with you. If every update needs a developer, your site becomes a static catalogue. Magento lets your team manage highlights, events and content entirely on its own.

According to McKinsey, personalisation can cut customer acquisition costs by up to 50% and lift revenue by 5 to 15%. These are not figures reserved for pure players with budgets in the tens of millions. They are ranges within reach of SMEs that invest wisely in the right architecture from the outset.
